– Texturing

– Layering

– Building up and scraping back

– You will explore mark-making techniques

– Wax applications

– Incising and inlaying

– Explore color and create depth through use of pigmented wax, pigment sticks and glazing techniques

– You will incorporate thread, tissue papers, metallic and gold leaf

Participants will go home with one original painting. All materials are included but you are encouraged to bring ephemera, and other materials you may want to incorporate into your piece.

What is included in this workshop

What Is Encaustic?

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the natural beeswax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer
