Create stunning botanical prints using real ferns, leaves, and flowers in this immersive eco-dyeing workshop with artist Katharine Fletcher. After a short introduction to the technique, Katharine leads a one-hour walk (on uneven ground) at Spiritwood, her hobby farm where she will identify the plants you’ll be seeing. Then you will collect specimens for your artwork. Back in the studio, you’ll compose your botanicals inside prepared folded watercolour paper “sandwiches”, bind them securely, and put them into a cauldron (aka a “dirty pot”) of water, vinegar, rusted iron and onion skins. As they simmer away, our group will have lunch. After about an hour or so, we will remove them from the cauldron, cool the bundles, and then unwrap the watercolour “sandwiches.” Et voilà! You will discover beautifully detailed, one-of-a-kind impressions.
Participants will leave with finished prints, practical knowledge, and confidence to continue experimenting.
