Barbara Ham
As a lover of bling, Barb started making her own jewelry in 2006. While searching for unique beads she discovered lampworking. Lampworking is a type of glasswork where a torch is used to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements. She took an introductory lampworking course in 2011 and was immediately hooked. Barb has been working exclusively with glass since then. She has had the privilege to take workshops with leading lampwork artists.
“I love to experiment and use the chemistry of the glass to enhance my designs.”
Barb works mainly with soda lime glass which is the most prevalent type of glass. She also works with borosilicate glass which is commonly used for bakeware. Her work often incorporates reactive glass. Reactive glass causes a chemical reaction when mixed with other glass or has metallic elements such as silver that can be manipulated in the flame. Reactive glass inspires her to master techniques to achieve new and beautiful effects in her work.
One of the biggest challenges with glass is to figure out how to achieve different effects. You need to understand how the glass will flow with the heat as well as the chemistry of the glass you are using. She is continually experimenting with different glass and techniques to achieve her artistic vision.
