Imperfection is the basic principle of Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese philosophy of accepting your imperfections and making the most of life. You will play explore and dive into the world of discovery using encaustic wax as your medium. Encaustic is a perfect vehicle for artists wishing to explore this aesthetic. Imperfection is welcome. Play is promised and freedom and fun are guaranteed. Take home the principles learned and apply them to your art and your everyday life!

This 2 hour teaser workshop, will be held in the relaxing La Fab Art and Cultural Center in Chelsea Quebec 12 minutes from downtown Ottawa. This is a perfect opportunity for beginners to get a taste of encaustic painting.  In this fun and relaxing workshop you will take away several postcard size wood panels and learn the basic techniques to create an encaustic piece as little as 2 hours.

What Is Encaustic?

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the natural beeswax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer this FUN hands-on workshop:

Learn various techniques, step by step melting, layering, painting, mixing colors creating smooth or textured surfaces, collage, embedding tissue papers, gold leaf, silver leaf, bronze leaf, and alcohol inks into the warm encaustic medium.
